Manufacturing companies in the US

face severe challenges in sustaining a competitive workforce. Based on the renowned standards of German apprenticeships, our dual apprenticeship training programs address this issue.

Many skilled workers from the baby boomer generation are getting ready to retire and a lack of suitable applicants means their soon-to-be-vacant positions cannot be filled. Around 83% of US manufacturers cannot find the skilled workforce they need -- a situation that may result in about 3.4 million open positions by 2025.

Among the German-American business community the skills gap is a major obstacle when it comes to future investments in the US. With the US economy booming, about 75 % of German companies have planned to expand their business and increase their workforce in 2016. However, 69% have reported difficulties in finding employees with the adequate skills to execute their growth strategies (Source: GABO 2016).

Dual Apprenticeship Programs are an innovative and industry-led approach to education. Benchmarked on the German Dual Education System, they are the gold standard of a practical educational model developed in conjunction with technology leaders. They generally combine practice, theory and work to train a globally competitive workforce. Companies get a tailored training program, greater employee loyalty and access to a high-quality candidate pool. The programs are designed for companies to have a workforce tailored to their needs -- meanwhile, the apprentice will have a leg up on their competition, since they receive hands-on experience while simultaneously learning theory.

Here are just a few Key Elements of the GACCs' Dual Apprenticeship Programs:

  • Program Development, Administration and Management
  • HR & Application Services
  • “Train the Trainer” Program
  • Exam Preparation and Management
  • Certification

Involvement in the Midwest

GACC Midwest’s tailor-made apprenticeship program ICATT (Industry Consortium for Advanced Technical Training) addresses the needs of companies in Illinois. Their challenge finding a skilled workforce led to the design of this unique training program - a company driven approach to workforce training. Following the structures and worldwide recognized standards of the German Dual Model, this three year program combines on-the-job training at companies and theoretical training at a college for the professions of Advanced Manufacturing Technician, CNC Machining Professional, Freight Forward & Logistics Agents and many more.

Together with the Illinois Manufacturers' Association, and Harper College, GACC Midwest formed the Illinois Advanced Apprenticeship Consortium (IAAC) with the purpose to scale the unique ICATT apprenticeship program all over Illinois.

We’re proud to announce that our efforts are supported by a grant from the US Department of Labor (DoL).
