Annual Executive Wine Dinner 2012

GACCoM was excited to hold its Annual Executive Wine Dinner 2012 another extraordinary evening with members, their clients, and friends. At the luxurious InterContinental Hotel in downtown Chicago, we celebrated the vibrant German-American business community and especially our anniversary members with an exquisite seven-course dinner by renowned Executive Chef Kurt Mittelberger, paired with some of the finest wines from Europe. We would like to thank all our sponsors and members as well as our special guest, Chicago Deputy Mayor Steve Koch, for making this Wine Dinner an unforgettable evening.

Successful Workshop on Success Strategies from the “Mittelstand” – Oct 25,2012

Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI) and GACCoM organized a workshop on Success Strategies from the “Mittelstand” as part of a business delegation with 6 German companies from multiple industries. During the workshop, small- and mid-sized German companies discussed their international success strategies in export, workforce development, and innovation with their U.S. counterparts. The discussion was followed by over 60 visitors from several states who gave great feedback on these “hot topics”. The outcome underlined the importance of regular communication and exchange of knowledge between German and U.S. companies to stay competitive in a global market.

GACCoM on the Road


Bi-Annual GACC Meeting in Houston, Texas - Oct 11-12, 2012

Coordination of the GACCs is very important, particularly for moving forward initiatives like the upcoming German American Business Outlook, the German American Business Forum in May 2013 in Hamburg, a skilled labor initiative, coordinating service offerings and enhancing member benefits, as well as representing the interests of the German American business community.  The executive management teams of each GACC office, together with the Representative of German Industry & Trade office from Washington, DC, met in Houston to discuss these topics and more. 


German American Water Technology Exchange Days in Iowa, Missouri, Illinois – Oct 31 - Nov 1, 2012

During three stops across the Midwest, the German American Water Technology Exchange Days 2012 presented innovative know-how from Germany as well as policy and market developments on both sides of the Atlantic. Global experts discussed regional issues in each location: industrial water usage in Cedar Rapids, IA, sustainable regional water management in St. Louis, MO, and municipal water infrastructure in Chicago, IL. Two experts from Germany presented potential ways of exploiting synergies between the U.S. and Germany. The German American Water Technology Initiative will continue in 2013 with the 2nd edition of the German American Water Technology Magazine, and expert roundtables in St. Paul, MN, Grand Rapids, MI, Milwaukee, WI, as well as a German Night Reception at WEFTEC in Chicago, IL, among other events.


Public Transit and Energy Efficiency Delegation Visit to Germany – Sept 17-21, 2012

GACCoM lead a high-level delegation of public transit and energy efficiency professionals to Germany in September this year to learn about energy efficiency in urban transit infrastructure in Germany. The delegation was sponsored by the Energy Efficiency Initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Highlights of the visit included the Stuttgart 21 project, a day at the InnoTrans trade show and meetings with companies including HaCon, PTV Group and INIT AG. The delegates, which included committee chairs and members of the American Public Transit Association, have already started to spread the knowledge gained in Germany throughout the industry in the US.


German Delegation on Technology Transfer visits Wisconsin – Oct. 24-27, 2012

Prof. Dr. Birgitta Wolff, Minister of Science and Economics of Saxony-Anhalt, lead a delegation of academic and high-tech leaders to Wisconsin. The delegation was focused on learning about technology development and transfer in Wisconsin and establishing long-term ties to the technology transfer communities in Madison and Milwaukee. Their highly informative program included visits to the University of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, as well as an evening with the Wisconsin Technology Council at the MillerCoors brewery. Laura Flamm, Manager, Consulting Services at GACCoM, accompanied the delegation.


Energy Efficiency Innovation Seminars in the Midwest – Oct 22-26, 2012

GACCoM brought the 2012 Energy Efficiency Innovation Seminars on the topic of Sustainable Architecture and Green Building Technologies to four Midwestern Universities to inspire future leaders in the field.
Our expert speaker, Dr. Frank Heinlein, Director of Strategic Management at the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and Director of Business Communications at the Werner Sobek Group, spoke about the German approach to making sustainability in buildings measurable. The following companies presented their innovative products and services to the audience of students and faculty at Purdue, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Valparaiso and Northwestern: Ebert & Baumann Consulting Engineers, Weishaupt America, Wilo USA LLC, and DIAL.  Additionally, alumni of GACCoM’s Transatlantic Program – Young Technology Leaders (TAP-YTL) spoke about how their careers in the sustainability field profited from their participation in the program.

dasHAUS in Denver, CO – Innovation in Renewables and Energy Efficiency - October 14-23, 2012

GACCoM was pleased to present dasHAUS at Denver’s Sustainability Park. The Grand Opening ceremony of this mobile exhibition of innovative sustainable building technologies and concepts from Germany featured speeches by Dr. Bernd Fischer, Consul General at the German Consulate General in Los Angeles, Jesse Young, President of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest – Colorado Chapter, Jerry Tinianow, Chief Sustainability Officer for the City and County of Denver, and Lorrie McAllister, Executive Director of the Colorado Renewable Energy Society. The overwhelming success and record-breaking attendance of the Chicago and Denver locations attest to the depth of engagement and support for the building efficiency and renewable energy industries in our region. The year-long North American dasHAUS Tour has certainly been a remarkable journey, bringing together over 16,000 attendees representing the building and solar industries, universities and government.

The German American Trade (GAT) magazine is the official bi-monthly magazine of the GACCS and contains interesting articles, features and news items about trade in the region.
