GACC Midwest ChamberBrief: September 2014 Issue

 Dear Members and Friends,

The more than 330 of you who were present can confirm it: this year's German Night Reception @ IMTS, Industrial Automation and MDA was a stunning success! This record attendance once again confirmed the importance of German companies for the U.S. market. It also underlined the sigificance of IMTS, which in its 30th edition is on track to rank among the four largest IMTS events covering more than 1.2 million net square feet of exhibit space and hosting more than 1,900 exhibiting companies.

On Tuesday, Apple rolled out one of its most ambitious product launches, aiming at retaining its competitive edge. "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower," said iconic innovator Steve Jobs, remembered today for the many ways in which he changed the world. He was not an inventor: He did not create the first personal computer, nor the first digital music player, or the mobile phone - but he took the existing technology and revolutionized it, made it accessible, useful, reliable - and cool. What makes a great innovator? Our speakers that you see in the header will give different answers from different perspectives, different industries, different backgrounds. Together, we hope to come closer to the answer at our Inspiration for Innovation Forum on September 19, 2014 in Lake Geneva, WI!

Sounds great, but maybe a little out of the way? You would like to enjoy a beer or two at the Oktoberfest celebration in the evening? Just take our airberlin shuttle! Enjoy first class transportation in a leather seat coach bus, and first class service from the charming airberlin crew from Rosemont, Chicago to Lake Geneva and back!

With this month's Staff & Services Spotlight, we'd like to introduce Jasmin Welter, Manager, PR & Communications. If you are you an innovation leader in your industry, you should get in touch with her soon! Jasmin will be editing this year's GACC Midwest Report on Innovation, and is looking forward to your contributions!

Furthermore, Jasmin is already working on the 2015 German American Business Outlook. Make sure to participate and mark you calendars - the results presentation will be held at Thomson Reuters Times Square in New York City on December 8!

Best wishes | Herzliche Grüße,

Your GACC Midwest team

Listen to entrepreneur and investor Howard Tullman, CEO of 1871, keynote speaker at our Inspiration for Innovation Forum on September 19!

Innovation is very much associated with the startup scene, and 1871, Chicago's entrepreneurial center for digital startups, is certainly one of the hubs. But innovation is not just something for the tech hubs of 1871, Silicon Valley or even Berlin, where Torstrasse is often referred to as “Silicon Allee.” Following the lead of IT, telecoms, and media companies, more traditional companies are increasingly funding and investing directly in startups across Germany and the U.S. - Read about German companies on the hunt for disruptive innovation

Without Innovation, there is no Entrepreneurship, no Growth and no Success, so join us as we ask these questions: What makes a great innovator? How can you foster innovation in your company? What is innovation? Hear answers from our panelists from both sides of the Atlantic including Fraunhofer, Bosch Rexroth, Johnson Controls, Roland Berger, Naurex, the University of Notre Dame and many more.

This week brought the IMTS show, co-located with Industrial Automation and MDA North America, to Chicago’s McCormick Place and our team had a very busy week given the significant representation of German companies and pavilions at the show.

This was confirmed by the overwhelming success of our German Night Reception yesterday! We had a record attendance of over 330 participants and received excellent feedback

Our Chairman of the Board of Directors, W. David Braun, spoke a few words of welcome and introduced Annika Klar, Director at Deutsche Messe, Rich Huss, CEO, Festo Corp., and Adam Pollet, Director Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity who in their speeches stressed the success of this year’s trade show as well as the importance of German companies for the U.S. market.

Inaugural Michigan HR-Executive Circle - A Great Success!

The inaugural Michigan HR-Executive Circle took place on Thursday, September 4th and was a great success. Hosted by member company KOSTAL North America in Troy, MI, the event featured Nicole Dessain, founder of talent.imperative, as our very first guest speaker. Ms. Dessain spoke on the broad topic of Employee Engagement and touched on issues related to Employer Branding and attracting top talent, the impact of Employee Engagement (or lack thereof) on business results and how to involve internal stakeholders in Employee Engagement beyond the Human Resources function. Roughly 20 HR Managers/Directors and other C-level decision-makers from German American companies were in attendance, ensuring an engaging discussion on shared challenges and successful experiences around this topic.

The HR-Executive Circle will be held on a quarterly basis going forward, organized by GACC Midwest, Michigan Office in cooperation with GACC Midwest Michigan Chapter. If you would like to take part in future events, please contact Dieter Lehnert, Manager, Michigan Office for additional information.

Bosch breaks ground on Plymouth Township expansion

Robert Bosch LLC, a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of German Robert Bosch GmbH, expands its Technical Center in Plymouth Township, Michigan. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder joined Robert Bosch LLC President Mike Mansuetti on August 25, 2014, in a ceremonial groundbreaking to publicly announce a 220,500-square-foot expansion of Bosch’s Technical Center. Also present during the ceremony was Dieter Lehnert, Manager of GACC Midwest's Michigan Office.

There was a total investment of $40 million to design, build, equip and furnish the site including an estimated $25 million for construction. This added capacity will allow Bosch to increase efficiencies through co-location and collaboration of associates in Southeast Michigan with up to 200 new jobs expected in the next three years.

Germany is world-renowned for its role as a pioneer in the energy sector. Already a global leader for installed renewable energy capacity, the ambitious goals of the German Energiewende (or Energy Transition) ensure the country will remain at the forefront of energy innovation. "German engineering" has come to stand for technological excellence, a reputation well-suited for solving the challenges of creating the cleaner, smarter and more adaptive energy distribution and storage network of the future.

Participants of the TAP-YTL Smart Grid & Energy Storage delegation will engage with key players of the German energy industry from September 21-29. Structured intercultural communications training is integrated into the program and assists each Young Technology Leader in advancing their career. Destinations include the Goethe Institut and GTAI in Berlin, Bundesnetzagentur in Bonn, Siemens in Düsseldorf, Vattenfall in Hamburg and many more.

This fall we proudly present a new series of the Energy Efficiency Innovation Seminars, focusing on Energy Efficient Transportation Systems from October 27-30. We are excited to be collaborating with four renowned universities in the Midwest: Michigan State University, University of Toledo, Ohio State University, and University of Kentucky.

The seminars will include presentations by select German companies and institutions, and will feature an expert speaker from the transportation sector in Germany. Therefore students will be able to connect their classroom studies to real-world technologies and developments. We look forward to an all-around productive seminar series, as students and professors mingle and network with the participating German company representatives.
