ChamberBrief 2017: May Edition

Dear Members and Friends,

Some of you might have accidentally received the May ChamberBrief in plain text format - our apologies for this. Please enjoy the newsletter in its proper HTML version below.

The recent surge of interest in apprenticeship in the US has been exciting for GACC Midwest. Our ICATT Program swept five out of nine 2017 Young Adult Employer Champions Awards from the National Fund for Workforce Solutions. This clearly shows that our industry consortium for SMEs in Illinois leads workforce development nationwide by creating career pathways for young workers in manufacturing through apprenticeships. Read the press release here.

Mario Kratsch, our Director Skills Initiative, met with leaders of workforce development at the national Apprenticeship Forward conference in Washington, D.C. last week. He presented best practices and the success of ICATT to an interested audience of major US players such as the Departments of Labor, Commerce and Education, countless companies and industry representatives, and funders like The Joyce Foundation, JP Morgan Chase & Co, Siemens Foundation.

Opportunities abound for our members to connect, network and partner with German businesses across multiple industries.

Participants learned about maximizing profitability through Energy Efficiency in the Food & Beverage Processing Industry at an expert conference. After a keynote speech from PepsiCo, panels explored German innovations in waste heat recovery, water quality, air compressor management, and more. Find presentations about their technologies here. GACC Midwest also organized a visit to the MillerCoors facility and set up B2B meetings for the delegation of select German innovators.

A delegation of company and public representatives from Thuringia, led by Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringia’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society, will be touring Midwestern businesses to explore opportunities in Industry 4.0 between Germany and the US. Meet them in Chicago and Metro Detroit between 5/15-17.

In June, we will host the Wind Energy Business Conference and Delegation. Our delegates are leading innovators in areas of wind energy site assessment/monitoring, equipment manufacturing, operations and maintenance. Attend to learn about energy policy, wind farm development and grid integration, and expand your network.

Our Transatlantic Cluster Initiative is looking for participants: A Lightweighting Technologies & Materials delegation will visit facilities and speak with key figures of the German Lightweighting industry over a 5-day trip through Germany in June. Space is limited so apply here! The Initiative will then cover the Medical Technology Industry with a US road show in July and a delegation trip to Germany in October. Contact Jessica Ferklass to get involved as a delegate, speaker or partner.
