ChamberBrief 2016: May Edition

Dear Members and Friends,

Our mission has always been to engage in a dynamic transatlantic dialogue between our two economies. A strong presence at Hannover Messe 2016 was a vital part of this endeavor. With 485 exhibitors, the US had the largest Partner Country contingent ever at the Hannover Messe.  Congratulations to our Board Member, Marco Siebert, who has spent the past 8 years building the ties that led to this achievement and the visit of President Obama.  There were countless events on US market entry and dual vocational training opportunities in the US, and our member Harting won the coveted Hermes Award.  Do you want to take your involvement at Hannover Fair one step further? Be a part of our new Invest Midwest brochure, to be published right on time for the IMTS show in Chicago in September.

With our skills efforts being backed on the highest level in Hannover, we welcomed Juergen Siegle, head of PAL in Germany, at our skills conference in Chicago. PAL is the authority for vocational exam standards in Germany.  Dr. Robin Mishra, Head of Science and Technology at the German Embassy in Washington visited our ICATT companies Wittenstein and Herrmann Ultrasonics. Our Skills Initiative department also administered the first PAL exams for the MAT2 Technical Product Designer cohort at our member Brose North America, Inc. in Auburn Hills, MI on April 30th.

In furthering our mission, we have exciting new programs coming up: Our next Business Luncheon on June 1 will feature BMW Technology, talking about how they are developing the future of mobile phone to car connectivity right here in Chicago, while also showing off the ground breaking i8 electric plug-in hybrid. Next month, we invite German companies looking to expand in the US to the third DAWT in Frankfurt a.M. to explore market entry strategies. Furthermore, we are now looking for industry clusters that are drivers of innovation and dynamic economic development for our new Transatlantic Cluster Initiative. Throughout the next 3 years, cluster leaders can participate in a series of 6 exchange programs - each focused on a different industry – that will promote  transatlantic knowledge exchange through content-driven meetings. Lastly, we are re-launching our CFO Circle – open exclusively to CFOs of German subsidiaries in the Midwest. Please contact Kirsten for your invitation to exclusive peer discussions on all things finance.

This week marked a big week for us and the global AHK network. At the AHK World Conference in Berlin, heads of all AHKs came together to strategize on our role and services for German exports. With the most recent AHK Global Business Survey confirming the importance of the US market for German companies, and the US surpassing France as Germany’s leading trading partner, Mark Tomkins held a presentation about the opportunities arising from this strong economic relationship. Greetings from our past President Simone Pohl and former Vice President Barbara Zollmann who also joined the conference!

Hessen Delegation

Before he headed to Germany, our Vice President Werner Ott accompanied a high-ranking delegation from the State of Hessen to Wisconsin that GACC Midwest had organized together with our Wisconsin Chapter. Minister President Volker Bouffier and Governor Scott Walker re-signed the 40-year long partnership between the two states and explored opportunities for future bilateral cooperation. Congratulations to this wonderful partnership!

We look forward to welcoming you at one of our upcoming events.

Kind regards,
Your GACC Midwest Team
