ChamberBrief 2015: July Edition

Dear Members and Friends,

Our signature events of the year, our GACC Awards Gala & Smart Factory Industry Forum on October 9, are attracting a great deal of attention! We are accepting awards applications, sponsorship, and reservations now. Make sure to apply for an award & sponsor for visibility at our biggest event of the year!

In summer, things usually slow down, but this is certainly not the case at the Chamber: Munich, Berlin, Colorado, Ohio, Wisconsin, Washington D.C.…our staff has been traveling all over, promoting German-American business:

Be it the German American Business Forum (DAWT), AHK's first worldwide Membership Meeting, or events by our Chapters, such as the 19thAnnual Biergarten Fest in Morrison, Colorado and German Fest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin – we made sure to be a part of it!

Skills Director Mario Kratsch was on the road as well, invited by the National Academies in Washington, DC, to participate in the “Symposium on the Supply Chain for Middle-Skill Jobs: Education, Training, and Certification Pathways” where he chaired a panel on “Apprenticeships: Learning from Other Countries”. Together with other experts in the field, he led a discussion about structures and strategies that could make apprenticeships in the US an attractive career path again.

We continue to be on the move: on 7/28, we were in Columbus, Ohio for a Trade, Export & Investment Road Show with Hannover Messe. This provided an excellent opportunity to showcase unique opportunities associated with the US as the Partner Country for Hannover Messe 2016.

Last but not least, we also have digital news to share! Take a look at our most recent online feature: the White Paper Library. It is a platform for industry leaders and service providers to share knowledge and expertise for all things German-American business! Become a thought leader today by publishing your White Paper with us!

Best wishes | Herzliche Grüße,

Your GACC Midwest Team

DAWT

German American Business Forum | Munich

The German American Business Forum (DAWT) at the IHK München had its largest attendance ever, with over 260 participants. The engaging panel on German-American business was joined by all of our three AHK USA Chairmen: GACC Midwest Chairman W. David Braun, Partner at Quarles & Brady LLP; GACC New York Chairman Caroll H. Neubauer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at B. Braun Medical Inc. and GACC South and GACC Chairman Martin Richenhagen, Chairman, President & CEO of AGCO Corporation. Dr. Thomas Zielke from RGIT in Washington D.C., and Michael Gotschlich, Head of Division for Foreign Trade Policy North America joined them in the panel discussion. Once again, DAWT provided an excellent platform for professional exchange among participants. A special welcome reception for speakers, sponsors and board members was hosted by US Consul General William E. Moeller at his residence. Thank you to our board members who were in Munich with us.

Save the date for the German American Business Forum 2016: it will take place on June 16 at the IHK Frankfurt in the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Take a look at our DAWT Gallery for more impressions of the event.

First AHK USA Alumni Meeting | Munich

While in Munich for the German American Business Forum, we seized the opportunity to hold our first AHK USA Alumni Meeting. It was great to meet so many former colleagues again, including our former President & CEO Simone Pohl! We were also pleased to see our Chicago Alumni with the highest representation at the reunion -  that's the team spirit & reliable network we cherish so much at the Chamber!

Inaugural Worldwide AHK Membership Meeting | Berlin

Jayne Riemer-Chishty, our Director of Membership & Chamber Development, participated in the first Global AHK Membership Meeting at DIHK Berlin. For the very first time, 44 participants from 39 countries came together to exchange membership concepts from around the world and discuss new ideas and strategies. AHK USA was highlighted as a best practice example for our National Partner Program and GACC Midwest in particular for our unique Christkindlmarket that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. This productive meeting will contribute to an ongoing global dialogue among AHK membership teams in order to provide the best service to our members.

Final TAP-YTL Alumni Reunion | Chicago

The final TAP-YTL Alumni Reunion took place in Chicago. After over a decade of outstanding programs, the meeting brought together participants from several delegations. It was a great opportunity for exchange and updates on the work of our alumni as well as GACC Midwest's programs. Participants enjoyed a very insightful presentation on German Mittelstand by GACC Midwest’s Board member Andy Stecher, CEO and President of Plasmatreat North America. Andy offered great insights on cultural differences between the US and Germany in his interactive presentation. We thank all of the participants for this great event and look forward to cooperating with this engaged new generation of the German-American business community!

WI Chapter: VIP Reception @ German Fest | Milwaukee

Over 100 of our members and friends came together last weekend to celebrate German Fest at the annual VIP Reception of our Wisconsin Chapter - what a great turnout! Together they enjoyed some traditional German food and used the opportunity to meet new people as well as reconnect with others from the German-American business community. Mark Tomkins and his family especially enjoyed meeting so many of our Wisconsin members. Special thank you to our colleagues John Gatto and Vicki Fox!

CO Chapter: Annual Biergarten Festival | Morrison

Not only at the German Fest in Wisconsin, but also at the 19th Annual Biergarten Festival in Morrison, CO, Mark Tomkins joined our Colorado members to celebrate some German Gemütlichkeit. The setting in Morrison was spectacular, right along the front range with a view of the red rocks area outside of Denver. It was great seeing everyone there and we would especially like to thank Joshua Seeberg and Peter Einsle for organizing this event.
