Transatlantic Cluster Initiative

Roadshow on Metalworking

Manufacturing has a tremendous economic significance in the US. Especially the industrial Midwest was able to gain great importance due to geographical location early on. The Midwest alone is home to three institutes (DMDII, America Makes, and LIFT) for the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. However, through globalization, automation, constant technology developments for computer and robotics-integrated systems, a transatlantic focus is inevitable.

By recognizing and adjusting to new market developments Germany has not only become a leading European metal supplier but also established a high-ranked position worldwide. Through investments in research and development as well as workforce development, the metal industry successfully maintained to be one of the ten biggest industry sectors in Germany.

To build on these developments, GACC Midwest organized its first roadshow on the topic of Metalworking July 11-14, 2016 in Chicago, IL, Cleveland, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA. The roadshow provided company representatives, research professionals, and other industry stakeholders in the metal industry the opportunity to discuss opportunities for international collaboration, innovation, and best practices in workforce development.

The roadshow will be followed by a Metalworking delegation trip to Germany November 14-18, 2016.15 US-participants will learn firsthand about best-practices from Brandenburg, Thuringia and Heilbronn in the metalworking industry.
